1,000 replies a day won't help you

Some people announced they'll never reply to anyone on this platform again, because "it doesn't matter anymore."

So the reason you were talking to people in comments was to get paid? 😳

Here's what a reply is worth in the open-source code, and the system that makes yours worth it.

what a reply does in the ranker

Two lines in X's For You code decide this whole debate:

  • OONRetweetReplyFilter removes every reply and repost from a non-follower's feed before scoring
  • the ×0.75 out-of-network discount still applies to your replies inside your own followers' feeds

So your reply is visible in the thread, to the people reading that thread. It is not being recommended to anyone. Reply reach is capped at your existing audience by structure, not by how good the reply is.

That's why 1,000 replies a day is a treadmill. It produces the one content type the feed refuses to distribute.

what a reply is for

The follow-back.

When the person you replied to follows you back, you're mutuals. From then on every original post you publish gets the mutual boost in their feed: the reply weight goes from 5.0 to 20.0, 4×, on every post, forever, bought once.

  • replying at strangers = 0 distribution
  • replying at someone who follows you back = a standing 4× on all your future originals in their feed

Judge a day of replies by mutuals earned. Not impressions.

the 40 / 40 / 20 split

Spending 100% of your replies on "big" accounts hoping for views is useless. Split it:

40% → mid-size creators (5k to 50k)

  • big enough to have real comment sections
  • small enough to reply back and follow back
  • the ones you'll end up collaborating with, in Spaces and in DMs

40% → peers (your size, give or take)

  • your future superfans and your future mutuals
  • they show up on your posts, not just like them
  • you grow together

20% → large accounts (100k+)

  • turn on notifications, jump in early
  • a corporate account will not follow you back, so the prize here is the humans in their comments, not the host

Follower count shouldn't be the only filter. Go by the vibe too. A 2k account with a live comment section beats a 200k account that never answers anyone.

who to skip

☒ people who never reply to their own comments ☒ accounts that auto-plug links everywhere ☒ posts with 500+ replies already, unless you're very early ☒ anyone you'd never follow yourself

A reply to an account that will never follow you back is a reply that can't pay.

the quality bar

Most replies look like this: "so true", "love this", "👀", "this is fire 🔥".

Those add nothing. You're not joining the conversation, you're echoing it. Every reply that earns a follow-back does 3 things:

  1. adds something: an insight, a story, a counterpoint, a joke that lands
  2. stays on the poster's topic: don't ask "why am i shadowbanned" under an AI post
  3. leaves the door open: a question, or a line they can pick up

Full breakdown with meh-vs-magnetic examples: how to write replies people remember.

the daily shape

Don't put a number on it. "Do 100 replies" is the wrong frame. Meaningful connections through comments do more for an account than any volume target.

  • cap yourself at 5 real replies a day. A cap, not a floor
  • mutual status first: a mutual gets priority, a near-mutual (follows you, not followed back yet) is next, a cold stranger with a great post is last
  • one high-effort reply a day: a personal story, a real number, a follow-up question
  • if that one lands, send a DM: "hey, really liked your take on ___. just followed. looking forward to more of your stuff." No pitch, no ask. One DM like that can change the direction of a career

your mission

▫️ pick 5 creators you admire ▫️ pick 5 at your size ▫️ pick 5 large accounts and go find the humans in their comments

Reply to them for 7 days with the 3-part bar above. Count follow-backs, not impressions 🧡
