don't ask AI to write it. ask it to break it

break my idea, don't write my post

don't ask AI to write it. ask it to break it

The most common mistake: handing over the pen.

You type "write my post about consistency", get something flat and generic back, and conclude AI can't do voice.

It can't do your voice, because you never gave it one. You gave it a topic and asked it to guess the rest.

swap the ask

Instead of this:

copy this
write me a post about consistency.

Say this:

copy this
break my idea on consistency: [paste your rough idea].
give me 3 stronger angles that still sound like me.

Now it isn't writing for you. It's brainstorming with you. You still write the post. What changed is that you start from your third-best angle instead of your first.

the 3 steps, every time you're stuck

  1. start with your idea. Not a topic. An idea. "I want to write about burnout recovery" is a topic. "Most burnout advice assumes you can stop" is an idea.
  2. tell it the goal. "I want this to sound raw, not motivational." Register is a constraint, and it's the one people leave out.
  3. then challenge it. "Break my angle. Give me 3 spicier takes that keep my tone."

Your ideas get better before you post, which is the only place getting better actually counts.

it mirrors whatever you hand it

A lazy prompt produces lazy output. That isn't a limitation of the tool, it's a description of what the tool does.

So when the result sounds like a bot, the useful question isn't "why is AI like this". It's "what did I leave out that a person would have asked me".

Usually one of these:

  • who it's for
  • what you actually believe about it
  • what you refuse to sound like
  • the specific thing that happened to you that made this worth saying

The last one is the whole ballgame. Nothing generic survives contact with a real detail.

rewriting a draft that sounds dead

When you already have a flat draft and don't want to start over, do these in order:

  1. cut every sentence that could open anyone's post. "In today's fast-paced world." Gone.
  2. replace one abstraction with one number. "A lot of drafts" becomes "4 of 10".
  3. put back the thing you softened. The opinion you hedged is the reason to publish.
  4. read it out loud. Anything you'd never say to a person gets rewritten or deleted.
  5. check the ending. If it closes on a rhetorical question, replace it with the thing to go do.

That pass takes a few minutes and does more for voice than any prompt.

Take a draft you already think is fine. Run the 5 passes on it.

Count how many sentences survive unchanged. That number is how much of it was ever yours 🧡
