comment surfing: how to grow on X without posting more

Everyone's busy yelling into the void with more posts.

Meanwhile the algo's favorite playground is comments. Conversations. Your replies can send people to your profile if you use them as a funnel, and the funnel has one trick most people never try: don't reply to the big account. Reply to the people in its comments.

why the comments, not the host

From the code: out-of-network discovery on X runs on engagement clusters (SimClusters) and embedding similarity (phoenix retrieval). When you and someone else keep engaging in the same places, the model learns your audiences overlap and starts testing your posts on their followers. That's the mechanism, and it's cluster-based.

From the ground: a 500k account is a corporate account. It will not follow you back. The person who left a thoughtful comment under it might, and they're already proven interested in the exact subject. The people in the comments want to have conversations. There's a reason they left a comment.

how to comment surf

1. locate the giants Find accounts with 500k to 1M+ followers in your niche, or in general. They pull hundreds of comments per post. That's your visibility playground. Build a list.

2. surf the comment section Scroll the replies. Instead of replying to the creator, reply to the commenters who stand out.

  • look for people dropping thoughtful takes or humor you'd follow
  • engage with them directly, in that thread or on their own posts
  • treat it like networking in public

3. build two-way visibility Click through to the profiles of people you vibe with. Comment on their posts too. Now the dots connect:

  • the model sees you engaging across shared spaces
  • it learns your audiences overlap
  • it starts showing your posts to their followers, not just to them

That's how you plant yourself inside bigger ecosystems without begging for attention.

the funnel, step by step

➛ find a post with a ton of comments in your niche ➛ find the people leaving interesting replies ➛ reply to their comment. add something, make it personal ➛ they see it, get curious, click your profile ➛ if your profile is solid, they follow

Which is why your profile has to be ready before you start surfing. The audit is blog 6.

take it a step further

Most people wait to be followed first. Most people stay strangers.

☑ drop them a follow, even if they don't follow you yet ☑ reply again or quote them if they say something smart ☑ send a simple DM: "hey, really liked your take on this. looking forward to more of your stuff 😊"

No pitch. No favor. A tap on the shoulder that says i see you (not in a creepy way 😂).

use AI to draft, if you edit

A prompt to train your own reply instinct:

copy this
You're a content creator building authority in [your niche].
You just found a trending post about [topic].
Write a comment that:
• adds one new, useful insight
• feels natural and conversational
• ends with a soft question
Keep it under 40 words and make it sound human, not robotic.

Always edit before posting. A comment that reads like AI costs you the profile click you were after.

the other thing hiding in your comments

Your own comment section is a content mine. Every question under your posts is a post you haven't written yet. Every objection is a hook. Pull 2 to 3 posts a week straight out of the replies people leave you.
