the accounts you follow decide who sees your posts

The accounts you follow train the algo, shape who sees your posts, and decide whether your reach grows or dies.

Most people sabotage themselves without noticing. Here's why, from the code, and the clean-up to run.

the model's main input is your history, not your bio

From X's open-source ranking code: the first thing loaded on every feed request is the viewer's recent engagement history. That's the main model input. Then your following list, blocks, mutes, muted keywords.

So when you follow 300 accounts you never interact with, or keep liking repost bots at 2am, you are writing the description of yourself that the model reads. Then it uses that description to decide who to show your posts to.

  • the algo studies who you follow and engage with to understand who you are
  • it uses that to decide who your content gets tested on
  • dead follows = tests on the wrong people = wasted impressions
  • wasted impressions = the model learns your posts don't land

This isn't personal. It's the input pipeline.

normalize unfollowing

Unfollowing ≠ hate. Unfollowing ≠ betrayal. Unfollowing ≠ burning a bridge.

It means the connection doesn't serve a purpose right now. Following isn't a loyalty program, and you can always follow them again later.

Unfollow:

  • accounts inactive 3 to 6 months
  • accounts you never interact with
  • repost bots and aggregators
  • accounts that no longer match the direction you're going

the clean-up plan

Forget "inactive follower checker" tools. Most are trash and some get your account flagged.

➤ go to your Following tab ➤ scroll manually ➤ unfollow in the 4 categories above

One slow, intentional sweep refreshes your timeline, your impressions and your reach quality.

Pace it. Nikita Bier (X's head of product) confirmed on 2026-07-31 that follow-churning is rate-limited. So: ☒ no mass unfollowing in one session ☒ no unfollowing people you just followed ☒ no rapid follow / unfollow cycles

Do it over a week. Let the model recalibrate.

the ratio to keep

Follow roughly 40% of the people who follow you. Not a rule from the code, a habit that keeps your feed readable and your history clean. Pick a number you can maintain and stop follow-for-follow entirely.

read your clean feed like a report

Most people scroll like zombies. Scroll like you're reading data, because a clean feed is a clean dataset.

When a post performs, ask why it performed, and look for 4 things:

visual anchors → fonts, color, emoji, images, layout. What stopped the scroll? pacing and tension → questions, line breaks, formatting that guides the eye. What made you keep reading? trigger words → "never", "because", "nobody talks about this". What emotional button got pushed? timing → morning, night, weekend. When did they post, and does it repeat?

A prompt to run on screenshots of a creator's last 20 posts:

You are a content strategist. Analyze these posts and reverse engineer the creator's style.
Tell me what patterns show up in: tone, timing, visuals or symbols, engagement strategy (hooks, CTAs, comment pulls), structure (line breaks, emoji, formatting).
Then summarize: their style fingerprint, 2 things to borrow or remix, 1 thing they do differently than most.

two things from the code worth knowing while you're in there

  • your own posts compete with each other inside one feed pull. 1st post ×1.0, 2nd ×0.625, 3rd ×0.4375. 2 to 3 of your posts won't show on someone's For You at the same time. Space them out
  • nothing older than 48 hours enters For You. The clean-up is for the next 2 days of posts, not your archive

the pattern scan

this week

  1. one 20-minute sweep of your Following tab, 4 categories, no tools
  2. stop replying to the same 10 people every day. go find 5 new ones in comment sections (blog 4)
  3. run the pattern scan on one creator you admire

One irrelevant unfollow = one useful impression you didn't have before. That adds up faster than you think 🧡
